Dolphins Stadium - Pro Player Stadium

The $115 million, state-of-the-art, open-air football facility was the first of its kind to be constructed entirely with private funds.

On August 26, 1996, Pro Player, the sports apparel brand of Fruit of the Loom, sponsored the renaming of Joe Robbie Stadium as Pro Player Stadium. The name was changed from Pro Player Stadium to Dolphins Stadium on January 09, 2005.

Plans for the stadium were first announced on March 5, 1984. The clearing for the stadium site began on July 22, 1985, and groundbreaking ceremonies were held on December 1, 1985.

Financing for Dolphins Stadium was based largely upon the licensing of executive suites and club seats on a 10-year basis. Executive suites range in price from $30,000-$90,000 per year. Club seats cost between $800-$1,800 per year on a 10-year license.

On March 7, 1990, H. Wayne Huizenga agreed to purchase 50 percent of Joe Robbie Stadium, enabling him to begin his pursuit of a Major League baseball franchise. On January 24, 1994, Huizenga acquired the remaining 50 percent of the stadium to give him 100% ownership.

The first football game was played on August 16, 1987, when the Dolphins hosted the Chicago Bears in a preseason contest. The Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers battled on March 11, 1988, marking the first-ever baseball game played at the stadium.

Originally named Joe Robbie Stadium, the state-of-the-art football stadium home of the Miami Dolphins became the home to the Florida Marlins for the 1993 season. Constructed between 1985 and 1987, Joe Robbie Stadium cost $115 million to construct. On August 26, 1996, Joe Robbie Stadium was renamed Pro Player Stadium after the sports apparel brand of Fruit of the Loom. The stadium remains the home of the Florida Marlin despite wishes of the ownership for a new baseball-only stadium. Since 1999 Marlins ownership has lobbied South Florida officials for a new stadium either in the city of Miami or in one of the adjacent locales such as Fort Lauderdale or Miramar. To this point however, no plans have taken shape enough to garner the Marlins a new home. Thus Pro Player Stadium remains the home of the Marlins.

2004 Top Draft Pick
Eric Campbell
The Braves, who usually draft pitchers with their first pick, compared Eric Campbell, a shortstop from Owensville, Ind., to Matt Williams, the former home run king.
Left-handed pitcher Taylor Tankersley,
taken 27th overall out of the University of Alabama, went 1-1 with a 3.38 ERA in six starts for Class-A Jamestown. He doesn't have an overpowering fastball,
but his bulldog mentality and smarts
make him a solid candidate to move
quickly through the system. The son of a
nuclear physicist, he received a $1.3 million signing bonus and
should start 2005 at Class A Greensboro.

New closer Guillermo Mota is an interesting choice as Armando Benitez's replacement. It would be difficult for anyone to follow a 47-save performance like the one Benitez mounted in his one-and-done South Florida tenure. But Mota, a career setup man through his first six big league seasons, has blown 11 of his 16 save chances. He also wore down at the end of last season, when he went 0-3 after Sept. 1 and his ERA ballooned to 7.79 in his final 14 outings. He has an overpowering fastball at times but tends to lean too much on his changeup, which he learned from ex-Dodgers teammate Eric Gagne. More power and less finesse would suit Mota well.
